Magnus Carlsen, Norwegian, 29 years old

The first in the history of chess absolute world champion (in three categories): since 2013 – the world champion in classical chess; in 2014–2016 and 2019 – World Rapid Champion; in 2014–2015 and 2017–2019 – world champion in blitz. In 2009, Carlsen's trainer was the 13th world chess champion Garry Kasparov.

The Norwegian is considered one of the youngest grandmasters in the world. He earned the title on April 26, 2004, at the age of 13 years 4 months 27 days (at that time he was second on the list of the youngest grandmasters in the world). In 2013, Time magazine included Magnus in the list of 100 most influential people in the world.

In late December, Carlsen visited Moscow, where he took part in the World Rapid and Blitz Championships. At a tournament in Russia, he won in both disciplines. Before the start of the World Cup, the grandmaster answered questions from RBC.

About the strongest rival

Answering the question which of those with whom I played was the strongest is not so simple. I think in a historical context it is definitely Kasparov. But I played with him after he overcame his peak. I think that I played with Viswanathan Anand when he was at the peak. It was probably the strongest player I have ever played with. I learned a lot from Kasparov, analyzing his games, and realized what a strong player he was, but at that moment he was already not in that strength.

On the political views of Garry Kasparov

I never discussed politics with him. It was always clear that we met for training. I think he was pleased that he saw in me the one with whom you can talk about chess on equal terms, so we did not waste time talking about politics.

About his beloved chess player – the fourth world champion Alexander Alekhine

What made Alekhine unique in his time? His ability to use the whole board is amazing. He had a strategy – to load one part of the board, then to switch abruptly to another, as a computer would do today. Alekhine had a special way of thinking! He also combined positional game and tactical. He was a very hardworking player who was far ahead of his time.

About his chess app Play Magnus
Magnus Carlsen is one of the developers of the chess game Play Magnus. Appendix 19 Carlsens will allow you to play a game with a chess player that he played at the age of 19 years.

I invested a lot of time and money in Play Magnus. In addition, my father is very interested in these things and has been investing my money for me for many years. Whether these investments are smart, I do not know, but he assures us that we are earning. Maybe father just takes the money, who knows. I know that we are focusing on translating the application into Russian.

How was the idea born? About six years ago, she was born out of a desire to make the game of chess on a smartphone more exciting, like on a computer. Many people, it seems to me, like to play with me, with my debuts, my style. Of course, you can’t completely simulate the way I play, because there is no human factor. But they did a great job and continue to improve the game. I can’t say that it was completely my idea, but when it came up, I thought it was very interesting.

About FIDE Head Arkady Dvorkovich
Former Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich was elected head of FIDE in October 2018. Prior to this, the International Chess Federation for 23 years was headed by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the former head of Kalmykia.

I am quite pleased with the work with Dvorkovich, I find him extremely job-oriented, ready for cooperation. Let's see what happens in the future, including with matches for the world crown. Much needs to be changed in FIDE, because the system was not particularly working. They are now trying to fix a lot, something good should start to happen, I look forward to continuing our cooperation.

If we talk about reforms, I would like to better coordinate the schedules of FIDE tournaments. There could have been more financial transparency: where did FIDE get the money, where did it go. But in the past there were more problems, they have already done a lot, so I'm satisfied.

About Fantasy Football Leadership
Carlsen is a big football fan. He participates in Fantasy, the English Premier League (Premier League) virtual football game. Users form a team of existing players participating in the championship of England, and depending on the actual statistics of their performances, they score points. As a result, the user who scored the most points in 38 rounds of the Premier League wins. Before the New Year, Carlsen was in first place with more than 7 million participants.

I think about it in between games. Many have hobbies to somehow be distracted, and this is mine. Last year I was pretty lucky and happy about it. My goal is mainly entertainment, having fun. I want to feel joy. The captain on boxing day (the traditional day of Premier League matches after Catholic Christmas) will be Mohammed Salah from Liverpool (points scored by the captain bring the player twice as many points. – RBC)

About the 2020 European Football Championship

I hope Norway qualifies. We have the opportunity to defeat Serbia and then play one game with Scotland or Ireland. If not Norway, then I will support France.

About the mistake of Hitler and Napoleon
Carlsen previously said that he studied the military tactics of Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte and found mistakes in them.

I will name their main mistake. Obviously, what you can learn from these guys (Hitler and Napoleon) is not to go to Russia in the winter, and here I am.
